So seems like I was the only one who bothered to go out into the rain and make it to fencing at LB today :}

Not that it was really worth it. Showed up with one lefty foil dead with a broken wire, broke the club lefty in the 3rd pool, and ended up having to switch to Right-handed and borrow something to finish. Then for some reason Alex Cheng went and did so poorly I got him for my first DE! bah, so lost that one, but at least I didn't hurt my elbow, just a bit sore.

40 of 76, which was not too bad. Fenced righthanded, since I didn't have any lefty epee gear.

Took me until the 4th bout to remember how to fence, but did ok after that... well Sergio still kicked my butt, but at least I won 3 of 6

seed (35) Hershberger, Aric :SWASH
at least I made the 80% cut in epee

(29) Brown, Alec 15 - 9
bah, I was doing ok, good even at the start, remembering how to fence epee keep my arm out there and let him run into it (essentially) but my elbow started to hurt and I had to keep resting my arm, lowering my weapon and resting the pommel on my front leg, it took too long to return to attack from there and he got several that should have been doubles, then my point control started to go - again from my arm being too sore - and I missed a few that could have been mine or at least doubles. I remembered him from my pool, and even though he'd beat me then I should have had an easier time than this. He has a good fast lunge, but I should have been able to double those, and when I kept my attack out, I was able to catch his arm coming in, or evade and hit a few times as he came in. but... And after I'd done such a great job of fixing my epee that had broken a wire - doing a splice and everything - that's the one that broke... double lunge he went under my blade and I caught his jacket on the lower back? and snapped it. I could hold my arm out in attack but the slightest beat or strike against it hurt my elbow, and if I tried to flick, or coupe that would hurt. So my arm was certainly not well yet. I guess I'll stay 'off' it for another 2 or 3 months, see if that helps. Suppose I need to get some lefty gear now... Gelnaw directed.

gah. okay but I have 2 really good excuses... :) I'm still fencing lefty and I suck at it, plus I caught cold just 2 days before PCCs - really annoying. Kelly from the bout committee was quite nice about me fencing lefty in righty printed knickers, so that eased things.
I think I could have beat Amaranathan & Gutierrez, even lefty, if I hadn't been so groggy and forgetting what I was doing... heh. Ah well, I'd have skipped PCCs if it had been possible, but there were no refunds and you had to register almost a month in advance, so... sick or not. The worst was that I could see things one second and lost them the next.

seed tie for 4th, just barely won the pool Me, Cody & Sergio all had 4 victories, I beat Sergio, he beat Cody, Cody beat me.

DEs
1st DE (29) Bailey, Creston - C05 vs (4T) Hershberger, Aric - B08 6 - 15
2nd DE (20) Laurie, Anami - U vs (4T) Hershberger, Aric - B08 6 - 15 again, Laurie was doing quite well, he beat an A in his first DE. I'd fenced him previously, and in the pool earlier so I actually did think there would be any problem.
3rd DE (4T) Pingel, Thomas - B08 vs (4T) Hershberger, Aric - B08 13 - 15 made me work, but I'd been watching him earlier which I think was helpful. My fletches landed more often than his, but we both probably over did them.
4th DE (9) Brown, Alec - C08 vs (4T) Hershberger, Aric - B08 14 - 15 lots of doubles made it go very quick, we were I think 13 - 14 at the first break, and I think I won on a double. I out-reached him a bit, but when he rushed in there was still usually a double. I think I surprised him a few times with my reach on the attacks where he thought he should have gotten a double.
5th DE (4T) Hershberger, Aric - B08 vs. (7) Tovmasyan, Vahram - B08 15 - 14. He was kicking butt all the way, had given up at most 9 points previously. I only saw his last bout vs. Clawson, Brian and Tovmasyan has a very fast very strong sweeping take repost, either up or down, and Brian was getting in far too close. He also likes to sit way down at his end of the strip. So my main strategy was to let him go back there and attack from as far away as I could while still staying out of range, lots of lunging and leaping back. When he got my blade firmly I was lost, but a few times I was far enough out that I could slip out of his take and still get a touch - really by luck mostly it was nearly a flat hit - at least 2 or 3 of those, including the last one. We did have a few doubles I think, but not many. My best hits were keeping low lunging in under his sweep and touching his thigh. I think I got at least 5 or 6 of those. And one hand touch, and once being in place for his attack and him running his bicep onto my point. The fletches I tried, I think I got one, he got 2 or 3 on his repost, and I got past a few times with no touches. He was mostly ahead or even the whole way up I may have gotten ahead once or twice but not for long. I was getting worried at the end my lunges were getting shorter, I was getting tired and I'd been getting a cramp in my front thigh starting the previous bout, which made me have to get in closer to touch. The last touch I went in for the thigh but not with a lunge, he caught it but not fully, I slipped off his blade and bounced the tip off his chest while he twisted and tried his repost but caught on my bell, a bit of luck really. And boy was he loud...
I had a nice cheering section, Cody, Sergio, and Sam were all there. Plus about 30 guys waiting for us to finish up so they could play basketball... :)

Seed (3) Hershberger, Aric - C08
DEs
1st bye
2nd (3) Hershberger, Aric - C08 vs (14) King, Brian - C09 12 - 15, bah he was sandbagging :) (or well he was doing poorly in the pools anyway, else he'd be in the top 4 seeds as he should have been) I got too close, countered too often, and missed a few parries - of course he'd pretty good at evading - he'll come in high for a flick and if you go for the high parry, he'll switch to low, if you go for a low parry he'll flick high, and he was getting all his flick on target, so I wasn't dropping correctly, just bending over. If I'd have been fencing smarter I could have done a bit better, but he's good.
Still it might have been a good thing I got knocked out of foil so early, I don't think I'd have had the energy to do as well as I did in Epee if I was still doing foil DEs during the Epee pools.

took the pool much to the consernation of Dave Moran :} he was out of practice, and I just did dumb things with Corona, that should not have gone as it did.

Round 2 Seed 9th

1st DE BYE (but nearly everyone got one)
2nd DE (9) Hershberger, Aric - C08 vs (24) Mauri, Simone - U 15 - 8
3rd DE (9) Hershberger, Aric - C08 vs (8) Westbury, Cameron - C08 12 - 15, I'm a bit surprised he was a C I didn't notice ahead of time, but I felt like I should have done better, (of course I usually think that) but still.

2nd round seed 8th

1st DE a BYE
2nd DE (8) Hershberger, Aric - B08 vs (25) Flores, Oscar - C08 12 - 15, and I was ahead 9-6 at one point. Too fast, too agressive, too often, not as rushed at sometimes, but still more than should have. I should have gone for arm more, and not body, although I did get one good fletche the other 4 were wastes of energy. Once did a nice parry 6 repost on a running retreat as he rushed me. and several times got his shoulder as he attempted to come in. then some doubles, the end was on a double, I'd gotten back from 9-14 to 11-14 and he smartly tried for a double. If I'd been thinking better (and perhaps less tired) I could have done better, sure I'd have lost to Thistlethwaite the next round more than likely, but still...

Round #2 - Direct Elimination

1 DE = BYE
2 DE vs (34) Mauri, Simone - U 15 - 10, much more difficult than I expected, he has a very fast parry 4 repost, I couldn't believe it at first, and tried it couple more times before it sunk in, that yes, he was that fast.
3 DE vs (18) Navarro, Reynaldo - C08 5 - 15, I'd expected more trouble from Rey, haven't fenced him in quite a while tho.
4 DE vs (23) Emge, Spicer - D07 15 - 14, gah, 12 year old kid! :) and I'd brought it up to 14/14. One way of looking at it is that I, really made him work for it, another is, hey it was only one more point why didn't you get it? :}. He was pretty good, and a small target - although really I don't think there were more than 2 where I missed because he was small. He had a quick retreat, and I was slowing down, my lunges didn't quite make it in. I did get several good low outside touches from distance, but anything else was practically infighting.

seeded fairly low at 28

1 DE vs (35T) Parseghian, Missag - U 14 - 15, dunno, thought I should have done better, and I'd brought it up from 10 - 13 to 14-13!, then I missed a double and it was 14 -14, and he got the last. Same as in foil, I made him work, but geeze all I needed was one more point. It was a hard one, going for the body usually gave him a hit, and I couldn't find his arm, so I had to let him get in too close and pick something off, or squirm out of his attack and hit him on my retreat.
